The Lemosho 8-day trek commences with a drive to the Londorossi Gate, where climbers complete registration and meet their guides and porters. From there, the journey continues to the Lemosho trailhead, where the ascent through the verdant rainforest begins. The first day is relatively gentle, featuring a gradual incline to aid in acclimatization to the increasing altitude.

Over the following days, trekkers will traverse a diverse array of terrains, including heath, moorland, and alpine desert. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife, such as monkeys, antelopes, and numerous bird species. The trek culminates with a challenging final push to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching Uhuru Peak at an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).

Day 1Arrival in Tanzania

Sote Tours staff will be waiting at arrival will meet you and will escort you to the waiting vehicle for loading your luggage then drive you to the Hotel in Moshi town. After checking in the hotel you will get briefing about your next day’s trek then your mountain guide will check your gears. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing at the pool or exploring the town of Moshi.

Day 2Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate (2,100m), Hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

After an early breakfast at your hotel, you’ll be collected from Moshi and transferred to the Londorossi Gate, the starting point for your Lemosho Route adventure. Upon arrival, the porters will meticulously organize and pack your gear for the trek, while you complete the necessary registration with Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).

Your ascent begins through the lush rainforest, where you can anticipate encountering rain, mud, and fog. This section of the hike offers opportunities to spot wildlife, including the elusive Colobus monkeys. Midway through the trek, you’ll take a break for lunch, then continue to the Forest Camp in the late afternoon or early evening.

The porters and chef, who move swiftly up the mountain, will have arrived ahead of you to set up the tents, boil drinking water, and prepare snacks for your arrival. After freshening up, you will enjoy a hearty hot dinner, followed by an overnight stay at the Forest Camp.

Day 3Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) – Shira 1 Camp (3,540m)

 

This trek serves as an essential acclimatization hike, as you will ascend over 650 meters by traversing a picturesque valley outside the Shira caldera rim, starting at an elevation of 3,600 meters. After several hours of trekking, you will reach the Shira caldera, a high-altitude desert landscape.

The Shira caldera is one of the three ancient volcanic peaks that once formed part of the Kilimanjaro volcanic complex. The caldera was created when the peak collapsed, subsequently filling with lava flow from Kibo Peak. Over time, the rim of the caldera has been eroded and shaped by weathering and volcanic activity.

You will set up camp and spend the night at Shira One campsite, situated at an elevation of 3,500 meters, allowing for further acclimatization in preparation for the subsequent stages of your Kilimanjaro climb.

Day 4Shira one campsite (3,540m) to Shira two campsite (3,800m)

Today’s destination is the stunning Shira 2 Camp, situated beneath the Northern Ice Fields of Mount Kilimanjaro. This section of the trek involves a scenic walk eastward across the plateau, moving toward Kibo Peak, which is adorned with glaciers. As you traverse the moorland meadows by a stream, you’ll approach Shira 2 Camp.

Shira 2 Camp is renowned for its breathtaking views and its position on one of the highest plateaus in the world. After arriving at the camp, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a meal and spend the night in this unique and elevated location, offering an excellent base for acclimatization and continued exploration of the Kilimanjaro region.

Day 5Shira two campsite (3,800m) to Barranco campsite (3,950m)

Today is dedicated to acclimatization and involves a significant trek. You will start with an early breakfast before embarking on a hike eastward to the Lava Tower, situated at 4,600 meters. This acclimatization trek is crucial for adapting to the high altitude. After spending time at Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and overnight accommodations. This strategic approach helps your body adjust to the elevation, enhancing your chances of a successful summit.

Day 6Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,235m)

Today’s trek is relatively short but essential for acclimatization. After breakfast, you will begin your ascent of the Barranco Wall, reaching an altitude of 4,235 meters. This challenging climb is crucial for acclimating to the higher elevations. Following the ascent, you will traverse various ridges and valleys, eventually arriving at Karanga Camp for a hot lunch.

Post-lunch, you will have time to rest before embarking on an additional acclimatization trek up the scree slopes towards the Southern Ice Field. This extra trek helps your body adapt to the high altitude. In the evening, you will return to Karanga Camp for dinner and an overnight stay, ensuring you are well-prepared for the days ahead.

Day 7Karanga Camp (4,235m) to Barafu Camp (4,600)

Today’s trek to Barafu Ridge Camp is notably challenging due to the high altitude. Although the distance is relatively short, the steep ascent requires a slow and steady pace to minimize fatigue. The trail traverses an alpine desert characterized by strong, cold winds descending from Kibo Peak and its glaciers.

You will arrive at Barafu Ridge Camp in the early afternoon, where you will enjoy an early dinner at 17:00. After your meal, you will have the opportunity to rest and prepare for the summit push. At midnight, you will embark on your final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, equipped with the stamina gained from your acclimatization and rest.

Day 8Barafu Camp (4,600m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) Then Down to Mweka (3,100m)

Wake up at midnight for a light breakfast before preparing for your summit ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. The objective is to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro, shortly before or around sunrise. Departure for the summit is scheduled for 12:00 AM. You will navigate steep scree and potentially snow-covered terrain, ascending to Stella Point on the crater rim (5,861 meters / 18,640 feet) between 4:00 and 5:00 AM. At Stella Point, you will be greeted with stunning views of the famed crater and its icy features.

Continue your hike along the Kibo Crater rim, which takes you to Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak. Here, you will have the opportunity to take memorable photos and celebrate your achievement. Following your summit activities, descend back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved lunch and rest. After collecting your gear, continue your descent through the moorland and heath zones to Mweka Camp. Enjoy a hearty dinner and overnight stay at Mweka Camp, reflecting on your successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 9Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m), Drive to Moshi

After enjoying a well-deserved breakfast, you’ll participate in a vibrant celebration with your team, featuring dancing and singing. This is the perfect moment to present tips to your guide, assistant guides, chefs, and porters who have supported you throughout your climb.

Following the celebration, you will begin your descent, which takes approximately three hours to reach Mweka Gate. At the gate, all hikers are required to sign in to receive their certificates of completion. Climbers who reach Stella Point (5,685 meters) are awarded a green certificate, while those who reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) receive a prestigious gold certificate.

After collecting your certificates, you will descend further into Mweka Village, a journey of about one hour (3 kilometers). There, you’ll enjoy a hot lunch before driving back to Moshi. Once in Moshi, you can unwind with a refreshing shower and enjoy additional celebrations to commemorate your successful Kilimanjaro adventure.
