Day 4Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

After an early breakfast, you’ll transition from the moorland environment to the semi-desert and rocky terrain of the Kilimanjaro landscape. This challenging day involves a 5-hour trek eastward, culminating at the impressive Lava Tower, which stands at an elevation of 4,630 meters (15,190 feet). Here, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a packed lunch and, weather permitting, climb the massive Lava Tower for panoramic views.

At this high altitude, it’s common for hikers to experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches and shortness of breath. To aid acclimatization, the descent from Lava Tower to Barranco Campsite, situated at 3,950 meters (12,959 feet), is strategically designed. The 6,800-meter (22,310 feet) descent allows your body to adjust to the high-altitude conditions.

The descent to Barranco Campsite takes approximately 2 hours and leads you into a scenic valley nestled below the Breach and the Great Barranco Wall, also known as the “Breakfast Wall.” Upon arrival, you will be greeted with essential drinking and washing water, followed by a hearty dinner as you enjoy the sunset views. This day is crucial for acclimatization and preparing for the challenges ahead on the Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro trek.

Day 5Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Barafu Camp (4,600m)

Following an early breakfast, you’ll embark on one of the most exhilarating parts of the Kilimanjaro trek: ascending the Great Barranco Wall. Though it may initially appear daunting, hikers often find that this Class 2 climb is less challenging than expected.

Reaching the summit of the Barranco Wall rewards you with stunning views of Heim Glacier and the vast expanse of clouds below. The trail then continues through the Karanga Valley, where it intersects with the Mweka Route, which you’ll use during the final descent.

After an invigorating hike, you’ll arrive at Barafu Camp (4,600 meters/15,090 feet), the last water stop for porters, as there is no accessible water here. The name “Barafu” translates to “ice” in Swahili, aptly describing this camp’s location on a rocky, exposed ridge.

The camp is subject to strong winds and rocky terrain, so it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the campsite before dusk. An early dinner will be served to help you rest and prepare for the summit attempt later that night. Your guide will provide detailed instructions on preparing for the summit ascent. Ensure you get to sleep by 7:00 PM to be well-rested for the challenging night ahead.

Day 6Summit Attempt (from Barafu Camp (4,600m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) fhen down to Mweka (3,100m)

Your guide will wake you around 11:30 PM for a light refreshment of tea and biscuits, signaling the start of your summit attempt. The ascent begins as you head northwest over rugged stone scree. Many climbers find this segment of the trek to be both physically and mentally demanding, requiring significant endurance.

After approximately 6 hours of climbing, you will reach Stella Point (5,685 meters/18,650 feet) on the crater rim. Here, you can take a moment to marvel at the breathtaking sunrise over the vast Kilimanjaro landscape. From Stella Point, you’ll continue your ascent for another 2 hours along a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in Africa.

Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is an extraordinary achievement! You’ll have a brief opportunity to take photos and enjoy a celebratory tea before beginning your descent back to Barafu Camp. The hike down to Barafu Camp takes approximately 3 hours.

Upon returning to Barafu Camp, you’ll have the chance to rest and enjoy a hot lunch under the sun. Afterward, you will continue your descent to Mweka Hut (3,100 meters/10,170 feet). The Mweka Trail will guide you through the scree and rocky terrain, transitioning into the moorland and eventually descending into the lush rainforest.

Mweka Camp, situated in the upper rainforest zone, often experiences fog and rain. Here, you’ll have dinner, freshen up, and rest comfortably after a demanding but rewarding journey.

Day 7Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m), Drive to Moshi

After a well-deserved breakfast, you’ll enjoy a lively celebration with your staff, featuring traditional dancing and singing. This is also the moment to express your gratitude by presenting tips to your guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. Following the celebration, you’ll begin your descent, which takes approximately three hours, back to Mweka Gate.

At Mweka Gate, all hikers must register their names to receive their completion certificates. Those who reached Stella Point (5,685 meters) will be awarded a green certificate, while those who achieved the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) will receive a prestigious gold certificate.

Upon collecting your certificates, you’ll continue your descent into Mweka Village, a journey of about 1 hour (3 kilometers). Here, you’ll be served a hot lunch before the drive back to Moshi. Finally, you can unwind with long-overdue showers and enjoy additional celebrations to commemorate your successful Kilimanjaro climb.
