Serengeti hot air balloon

Serengeti Balloon Safari How Does It Works?

There are several hot air balloon safari companies, but it is still advisable to pre-book this popular activity for your Serengeti Balloon safari holiday. This activity cannot be organized on the day and due to the reliance on favorable weather, it is not on offer throughout the year.

The price per person is around 560 to 600 USD, which covers the ride, a champagne toast after the landing, and a delicious bush breakfast with options for vegans/ vegetarians.

The price reflects the relatively high cost of maintaining and servicing the balloons as well as the rest of the pre and post-launch activities, including launching and recovery as well as the road transport to and from the launch site.

Each trip also requires a licensed pilot and a formidable team of around 20. Keep in mind, also, that because the weight of the balloon is a crucial safety consideration, passengers who weigh over 120 kilos (265 pounds) may need to reserve two places.

As such, it might be too pricey for budget and standard travelers, but if it is within your means, the feeling you’ll get when you are up there and looking down at the incredible scene below is priceless. So yes, it’s 100% worth it.

Serengeti hot air balloons are huge and the compartmented comfy baskets can accommodate from around 8 to 16 people for each voyage depending on the size. At this time, only children over seven years old are allowed on the trip and they must be accompanied by an adult.

10 Reasons to Book a Hot Air Balloon Safari in Serengeti

1. The views
A hot air balloon safari in Serengeti presents a unique bird’s eye view of these endless plains. During a hot air balloon safari, you will fly over the Serengeti plains filled with herds of wildlife grazing in the early morning over several square kilometers of the game park.

For photographers, this is a unique photo opportunity. A balloon ride gives you an aerial view of the wildlife and landscapes of Serengeti that is rarely captured in ground photography.

2. The thrills
A hot air balloon safari is a thrilling adventure. The feeling of lifting off the ground or the understanding that your destination is unknown and totally at the mercy of the wind is not an everyday experience.

When you arrive at the launch site you will be given a safety briefing to prepare you for your flight. The flight is about one hour and varies day to day depending on the weather and the wind. Even the most experienced pilot will not be able to guess exactly where you will land as you float in the direction and speed of the wind.

3. Go off the beaten track
Safari vehicles in Serengeti can only operate on designated trails so as not to disturb animals. On a safari vehicle, you are limited on where you can go for game viewing.

With a hot air balloon, you have the rare opportunity to go where vehicles aren’t allowed and explore the untouched areas outside the busy safari trails. If the wind is in your favor, you can float above the great river and witness the migration up close.

4. The Great Migration
Observe the mile-long migrating trails from a hot air balloon to see herds of seasonal migrating animals. While the great migration can be viewed from the ground, having a bird’s eye view of the migration will give you the true feel of its magnitude.

5. Get out of your comfort zone
If you are looking for a new challenge or a chance to do something out of the ordinary, a hot air balloon safari should be next on your bucket list. Whether you want to beat your fear of heights or simply want to experience floating in the air, a hot air balloon safari is a must-try.

6. Rise with the sun
There is nothing like a sunrise over the plains of Serengeti. Since liftoff is done at sunrise, a hot air balloon safari lets you enjoy the legendary Serengeti sunrise as your balloon rises and floats freely to where the wind will take you.

7. A morning game drive opportunity
Since balloon flights are done early morning, you will be picked up from your lodge at dawn and driven to the take-off site. On the way, you may see nocturnal animals that you will not see at any other time of the day. Early morning is also one of the best times for game viewing as animals are more active in the cooler dawn hours.

8. A unique game viewing experience
With no power lines, fences, and few roads, Serengeti is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for game viewing, even from a safari vehicle. However, going on a hot air balloon safari lets you experience uninterrupted game viewing at its best.

It allows you to stay away from other safari-goers given that safari vehicles tend to be congested in certain areas of the park where the most action is. For avid safari explorers who have been on safaris enough times, a hot air balloon safari will add something new to their safari experience.

Balloon rides do not follow a set route as they follow the direction of the wind. That being so, each balloon ride is unique and will always offer a new experience even for those who have gone on a balloon ride before.

9. Bush breakfast
Whether the balloon lands upright or trips over, you deserve a celebration. Don’t worry, that’s how balloons land all the time. With any hot balloon company, you are in good hands with a well-experienced team. After your landing, you will be met by the ground team and escorted to a designated area for a hearty luxurious breakfast on the plains. Enjoy the meal as you stare into the endless plains of Serengeti before heading back to your lodge or drive off for game drives in the park.

book a hot air balloon safari and enjoy special moments with a loved one.

10. Celebrate special moments
Gift your loved ones a hot air balloon safari to celebrate special moments such as wedding anniversaries, honeymoons, birthdays, university graduations, and more.

With all the accompanying thrills, a hot air balloon safari is also a great spot for memorable marriage proposals. Couples can also try our romantic Love Balloon together or book for their partners as gifts.
