Tour Details
The Marangu Route is one of the most sought-after hiking paths on Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route due to the availability of the beverage at the huts along the trail, the Marangu Route is unique for offering dormitory-style sleeping huts.

Spanning five days, the Marangu Route trek guides hikers through diverse landscapes, including rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert. It is renowned as the easiest route to the summit, boasting a high success rate for reaching the peak.

The Marangu 5-day trek is a condensed version of the traditional six-day Marangu Route, tailored for those with limited time. This shorter itinerary follows the same path as the six-day trek but is designed to fit within a five-day schedule.

The Marangu Route remains a popular choice due to its relatively straightforward terrain and the comfort of hut accommodations. However, it is worth noting that the route experiences high traffic, which can result in crowded conditions at times.

Day 4Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

After an early breakfast, you will resume your ascent into the alpine desert habitat. Hikers can choose between two trails leading to Kibo Hut (4,703m). The upper route, located to the right of the fork, is the same path used for the previous day’s hike to Mawenzi Hut. The lower route, to the left of the fork, is favored for its shorter distance, being approximately one hour quicker.

Kibo Hut is situated in the “Saddle,” the area between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo, within the alpine desert. Although there is no water supply at this camp, hikers can purchase mineral water and soft drinks at the camp office. An early dinner will be provided to allow hikers to rest and prepare for the summit attempt later that night. Your guide will give a detailed briefing on how to prepare for the summit night. Ensure you are in bed by 19:00.

Day 5Summit Day Kibo Hut camp (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut camp (3,720m)

Awaken at midnight for a light breakfast and prepare for your summit ascent. Since the climb to Uhuru Peak will take place in the dark, ensure you have headlamps or flashlights. Expect very cold temperatures until you start your descent, so be sure to wear all your warm layers.

Maintain a slow and steady pace, known as “pole pole” in Swahili. The objective is to reach the summit before dawn, allowing you to arrive at Uhuru Peak shortly before or just after sunrise. Navigate the steep switchbacks of scree or snow to reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5,861 meters (18,640 feet) between 4 and 6 AM. Here, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the famous crater and its ice caps.

Continue hiking along the Kibo Crater rim for approximately two hours, passing the renowned snowfields to reach Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak. Spend some time taking photos and enjoying the breathtaking views. After your summit experience, descend back to Kibo Huts for lunch and rest. Collect your equipment and continue your descent, crossing the saddle back to Horombo Huts. Enjoy dinner and overnight accommodation at Horombo Camp.

Elevation: 4,703m Uhuru Peak 5,895m to Horombo Hut camp (3,720m)

Upon signing out at the park gate, a vehicle will transport you back to your hotel, where you will have the opportunity to receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement.
