Lemosho 9 days with Crater Camp Route is a better altitude acclimatization program. Lemosho 9 days with crater camp is perfect for climbers seeking a more private hiking experience. Although the route joins with the more popular Machame route on the third evening, the first three days on the mountain are relatively quiet with very few other trekking groups on the trail.

This is an acclimatization trek because you will gain over 650m by starting walking across a beautiful valley outside the Shira caldera rim (3600m). After few hours you will reach Shira caldera. A high-altitude desert, Shira is one among the three peaks which erupted in the Kilimanjaro ecosystem. The peak later collapsed and formed a crater which eventually became filled with the lava flow from Kibo Peak. Its rim is eroded and blasted away by weather and volcanic action. Camp and overnight at 3500m elevation at the Shira one campsite.

Today the trek up to the Barafu ridge campsite is difficult because of altitude. The walk takes few hours because of the short distance but is steep which required a slow pace to avoid fatigue. You will walk across an alpine desert with strong, cold winds blowing down from Kibo peak and its glaciers. You will have an early dinner at 1700hrs then rest until midnight when you commence your push for the summit.
Elevation: 4,235m to 4,600m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
We will attempt the ascent to the summit in the morning. This is the most challenging part of the whole trek, both physically and mentally. We will climb for several hours at a slow and steady pace while taking frequent but short breaks. The trail winds into heavy scree as we make the steep climb to the crater rim. At Stella Point (18,900ft), you will be able to see signs of the summit from far. Our hike continues around the crater rim until we reach Uhuru Peak – the highest point on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Africa.
Our descend begins with a short distance walk to Crater camp, so that rest of the crew can join us to set up the camp. Here you will have the option to hike Reutsch Crater and the Ash Pit, or just explore the area surrounding the Furtwangler Glacier. It is not recommended to sleep at a high altitude, because the danger of developing serious AMS is high if adequate altitude acclimatization has not been reached, which is why the guides will keep an eye on you.

The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion.
