It is a seven-day trek that takes hikers through lush rainforests, scenic plateaus, and challenging rocky terrain. This route is also known as the “Whiskey” route due to its steep ascent and breathtaking views.

The Machame 7-day climb is an excellent choice for those who want to experience the beauty and challenge of Kilimanjaro without rushing the climb. The extra days on this route provide ample time for acclimatization, which is crucial for a successful summit. Machame Route 7 Days + 2 nights at the Hotel

Day 1Arrival in Tanzania

Sote Tours staff will be waiting at arrival to meet you and escort you to the waiting vehicle for loading your luggage then drive you to the Hotel in Moshi town. After checking in the hotel you will get a briefing about your next day’s trek then your mountain guide will check your gears. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing at the pool or exploring the town of Moshi.

Day 2Hotel – Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Campsite (3,000m)

After breakfast, our vehicle will transport you from the hotel drive to Machame gate. Here you will do the required registration procedures then you will start the trek through the rainforest to Machame camp where you will find the tents that are already set up for you. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Elevation:1,800m to 3,000m.
Distance: 13 km.
Hiking time: 5-7 hours.
Habitat: Montane forest.

Day 3Machame Hut Campsite (3,000m) to Shira Campsite (3,800m)

After breakfast leaves the glades of the rainforest and continue ascending by crossing little valleys and steep rocky ridge covering with heather plants to the western side of the mountain where the camp is situated. At this camp you will able to get the spectacular view of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, Kibo Peak, and sunset; then dinner and overnight.

Day 4Shira campsite (3,800m) to Barranco campsite (3,950m)

After breakfast, the journey continues from Shira Camp towards the pivotal landmark of the route: Lava Tower, situated at an elevation of 4,600 meters (15,088 feet). This segment of the route involves numerous ascents and descents, culminating at a campsite above 4,600 meters (15,088 feet). The terrain may pose challenges, and discomfort can be expected, typical of altitude acclimatization. It is essential to allocate at least 1–2 hours here to facilitate proper acclimatization. Consequently, our groups convene for lunch at the summit of Lava Tower.

Following lunch, the descent leads to Barranco Camp. Here, one encounters the renowned Barranco Wall, notable for its imposing stature and steep incline. While the climb awaits the next day, rest assured that the hiking trail is straightforward and not daunting in any way.

Day 5Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,235m)

Today is a short day of trekking. In the morning you will start climbing the Barranco wall and reach 4235m for acclimatization and continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga campsite for hot lunch. After lunch, you will have a bit of rest and get another acclimatization of trekking up the scree slopes towards the Southern ice field. You will then return to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 6Karanga Camp (4,235m) to Barafu Camp (4,600)

Today the trek up to the Barafu ridge campsite is difficult because of altitude. The walk takes few hours because of the short distance but is steep which required a slow pace to avoid fatigue. You will walk across an alpine desert with strong, cold winds blowing down from Kibo peak and its glaciers. You will have an early dinner at 1700hrs then rest until midnight when you commence your push for the summit.

Day 7Barafu Camp (4,600m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) Then Down to Mweka (3,100m)

Wake at midnight to a light breakfast and then prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Departure for the summit is at 12:00 AM. Switchback up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Stella Point on the crater rim (5,861 m/18,640 ft) between 4 and 5 AM. At this point, you will be having views of the fabled crater and its icecaps facing you.

Then after 1 hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snows takes you to Kilimanjaro true summit, Uhuru Peak here you will spend time taking photos. After your summit activities, you will descend back to the Barafu Huts campsite, for lunch, rest, collect your gear, and continue down through the moorland and heath zone to Mweka Huts campsite. Dinner and overnight at Mweka hut campsite.

Hiking time: 10 – 12 hours

Day 8Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m), Drive to Moshi

Following a well-deserved breakfast, your staff will have a big celebration full of dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that you will present your tips to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. After celebrating, you will descend for three hours back to Mweka Gate. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After receiving certificates, hikers will descend into the Mweka village for 1 hour (3 kilometers). You will be served a hot lunch then you will drive back to Moshi for long overdue showers and more celebrations.
