This trek serves as an essential acclimatization hike, as you will ascend over 650 meters by traversing a picturesque valley outside the Shira caldera rim, starting at an elevation of 3,600 meters. After several hours of trekking, you will reach the Shira caldera, a high-altitude desert landscape.
The Shira caldera is one of the three ancient volcanic peaks that once formed part of the Kilimanjaro volcanic complex. The caldera was created when the peak collapsed, subsequently filling with lava flow from Kibo Peak. Over time, the rim of the caldera has been eroded and shaped by weathering and volcanic activity.
