The journey takes you through a stunning valley to the Shira Caldera, a high-altitude desert that forms part of the Kilimanjaro volcanic system. The Shira Peak, one of the three original volcanic peaks, collapsed to create this expansive crater, which later filled with lava from Kibo Peak. Over time, the caldera’s rim has been shaped by weathering and volcanic activity.

Your trek will conclude at Shira One Camp, situated at an elevation of 3,500 meters. Here, you will spend the night surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the caldera, completing a day of acclimatization and preparation for the higher altitudes ahead on your Kilimanjaro climb.

This detour is designed to aid in acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude effectively.

Day 7Karanga Camp (4,235m) to Barafu Camp (4,600)

Today’s trek to the Barafu Ridge Campsite is a challenging but crucial part of your Kilimanjaro climb due to the high altitude. Although the distance is relatively short, the steep ascent requires a slow and steady pace to minimize fatigue. You will navigate through an alpine desert landscape, where strong, cold winds from the Kibo Peak glaciers can be quite intense.

Upon arrival at Barafu Ridge, you’ll enjoy an early dinner at 17:00 to fuel up for the final push. After your meal, take time to rest and prepare for your summit attempt, which begins at midnight. This strategic rest period ensures you are well-prepared for the demanding ascent to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 8Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Crater Camp (5,790m)

Summit Attempt: Early this morning, we will commence the ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the most demanding phase of the entire trek, both physically and mentally. We will proceed at a deliberate pace, taking frequent, brief breaks to manage the rigorous climb. The trail, consisting of loose scree, ascends steeply toward the crater rim. As we approach Stella Point (5,755 meters or 18,900 feet), you will begin to see the summit in the distance.

Our journey continues along the crater rim until we reach Uhuru Peak, the pinnacle of Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.

Following our time at the summit, we will start our descent with a short walk to Crater Camp, where the rest of the crew will set up camp. At this high-altitude location, you have the option to explore Reutsch Crater and the Ash Pit, or simply enjoy the scenic views around the Furtwangler Glacier.

Spending the night at this altitude is generally avoided due to the increased risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) if proper acclimatization has not been achieved. Therefore, our guides will closely monitor your condition to ensure safety and well-being.

Mweka Camp, situated in the upper forest zone, often experiences mist or rain in the late afternoon. As the day concludes, you will enjoy your final dinner on the mountain. This is an excellent opportunity to reflect on your incredible journey and rest well before the final leg of your trek.

Day 9Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m), Drive to Moshi

Following a well-deserved breakfast, you will partake in a celebratory event with your climbing team, featuring vibrant dancing and singing. This is the perfect moment to present your gratuities to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters who have supported you throughout your adventure.

After the festivities, you will begin your descent, taking approximately three hours to reach Mweka Gate. At the gate, all hikers are required to sign out to receive their certificates of completion. Climbers who reached Stella Point (5,685 meters) will receive a green certificate, while those who successfully summited Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) will be awarded a gold certificate.

Following the certificate presentation, you will continue your descent to Mweka Village, which takes about one hour (3 kilometers). Upon arrival, a hot lunch will be served. You will then drive back to Moshi for much-needed showers and additional celebrations to commemorate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro trek.
