Materuni Village, nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, is one of Northern Tanzania’s hidden gems. One of the village’s highlights is the impressive Materuni Waterfall, one of the tallest in the region, cascading crystal-clear glacier water from a height of 70 meters into a pristine basin below. The scenic trail to the waterfall, situated at an elevation of 2,500 meters above sea level, winds through valleys and hills adorned with tropical rainforests. Along the way, you’ll pass through vibrant “shambas,” the Kiswahili term for farms, where coffee, bananas, and avocados thrive in the fertile soil.

Materuni Waterfalls, situated in the heart of the Chagga tribe’s homeland, offer an authentic glimpse into traditional tribal life. Located just 15 kilometers from Moshi Town, this charming village is the final settlement before entering Kilimanjaro National Park.
Upon arrival, you will check in at the village office, marking the start of your memorable journey. Your adventure begins with a scenic 40-minute walk to the Materuni Waterfalls. During this trek, your knowledgeable guide will share insights into Chagga culture, village life, and the diverse local flora and fauna. The route provides stunning views, and on clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit. The waterfall, standing at over 80 meters, is a magnificent sight. The pool at its base offers a refreshing spot for a swim, so don’t forget to bring your swimwear!
After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, you’ll return to Materuni village for a traditional Chagga lunch. This meal includes a taste of local banana beer, a must-try delicacy that perfectly complements the authentic village experience.
Following lunch, immerse yourself in the local coffee culture. Discover the process of cultivating, drying, and roasting coffee beans. Participate in grinding the coffee beans while enjoying traditional Chagga songs and dances, enhancing your cultural immersion. Before you head back to Moshi in the afternoon, savor the coffee you helped prepare and take in the stunning views of the surrounding rainforest.
