Ol Doinyo Lengai, which translates to “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, stands as a striking feature in Northern Tanzania. This stratovolcano reaches an elevation of 2,962 meters above sea level and offers a unique vantage point into the caldera of Tanzania’s only officially active volcano, as well as the world’s sole carbonatite volcano. Historical records indicate that Ol Doinyo Lengai has been erupting since 1883, with the most significant eruption dispersing ash 100 kilometers away to Loliondo, near the Kenyan border.
Situated just south of Lake Natron in the Rift Valley, Ol Doinyo Lengai is located in the heart of Maasai territory and is revered as a sacred mountain. From its summit crater, you can gaze northward across the arid, salt-encrusted expanses of Lake Natron. To the south, the view extends over the Crater Highlands and the Ngorongoro Game Reserve. The eastern horizon features the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, while to the west, the verdant escarpments and hills form part of the western Rift Valley slopes. The volcano erupts approximately every seven years, with dramatic plumes of smoke emerging from its crater.
The ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai is challenging due to the daytime heat, scarcity of water, and the steep, unstable slopes composed of ash and loose rock. Typically, climbers begin their ascent early in the morning to reach the summit by sunrise. Due to the cold temperatures at the summit before dawn, it is advisable to wear a short-sleeved shirt with a warm jacket and long trousers. The northwest access route facilitates an early descent, allowing climbers to return from the summit while still in the morning shadow.
For those seeking an extraordinary climbing experience and a chance to witness one of the most unique volcanic phenomena in the world, Ol Doinyo Lengai presents a remarkable and demanding adventure.

Meals
Dinner and Breakfast
At 1:00 a.m., you will be transported by your driver to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, where your ascent of this iconic volcano begins. Given the challenging footing on the volcano’s slopes, especially in the darkness, it is crucial to follow your guide closely and avoid overtaking. The trek is demanding and typically lasts between 7 to 12 hours, depending on your fitness level and pace. Due to the steep gradient, it is advisable to take brief breaks approximately every 100 meters of altitude gained to aid acclimatization.
A strategic break for breakfast during the ascent will help you regain energy for the remainder of the climb. Upon reaching the crater’s edge, you will have attained an altitude of 2,960 meters. From this vantage point, you can hear the distinctive sounds of lava flowing within the crater of Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God.”
The descent is relatively easier, but caution is necessary as this is when most injuries occur. Be mindful of your steps to avoid accidents. After sunrise, it is wise to switch from a fleece to a sun hat to prevent heatstroke.
Upon completing your climb, your driver will be waiting to transport you back to the base of the mountain. You will then return to the lodge for a refreshing shower and rest, or alternatively, you can opt for a transfer to Arusha, if desired.
